What does this statement really mean? History has repeatedly shown us that even people without relationship with Christ can do great things. Some have become history makers, trendsetters, and ‘legends’.

Hitler, for example, used to be one of the most powerful rulers in the world. He killed millions of Jews to eradicate Christianity. In church history, There was a time when Christians in England were persecuted and put to death by the decree of the Empress; bloody Mary (Tudor). And John Lennon, the vocalist of the popular band The Beatles, bluntly scoffed Christ in front of people and of media wanting Jesus’ name to be forgotten through their popularity. At the present, we still know people, who are apart from Christ, do great things. Don’t their achievements disprove the statement of Jesus?

What does his statement really mean? To answer the question, we have to be reminded of what matters most for Jesus; and that is to do the will of the Father (John 4:34). To do the will of the Father is of eternal value. He said that in the last days many people will come to him. People who thought have done great things in the eyes of God. They performed miracles, preached to people, cast out demons and more. They will ask Jesus for their reward but Jesus won’t give them any. Because in reality they were not connected to Jesus at all (Matt 7).

Whatever good works we perform now would be of no value in eternity if we are apart from Christ. What matters most for Jesus are the things that will last forever. The things we do apart from this is of no value for him. Whoever we may become and whatever we may have are in vain unless we are connected to Him. This is the underlying principle why Paul said to live is Christ and to die is gain. Paul knew that what he did for Christ were not in vain, and leaving this earth is actually what he awaits for. Only because he was connected to Christ, can he claim this. Those who are in Christ can claim this for eternity. In the end, all will agree in what He said, ‘Apart from me you can do nothing.’
